Places to live to raise our kids ...

Hi Terry ... my partner and I have 3 children, the oldest is about to enter kindergarten, and we are thinking about leaving the city - for more space and a good school system ... however, we are not sure what communities are gay-family-friendly ... we have heard about Montclair, NJ as a gay-family-friendly community, but wondered if there were any others ... we appreciate any guidance you can give on the subject ... thanks ... Phyllis

Hi Phyllis,

You heard right about Montclair - it's been filling up with our families for years now. Unfortunately, it's also become such a hot town that real estate prices reflect its popularity - but I hear it's a buyer's market these days! Once Montclair became out of the price range of many, LGBT families started shopping in Maplewood, and there are now many families in that area as well. You might contact the LGBT center in Jersey City - Hudson Pride Connections - hudsonpride.org - for more Jersey suggestions.

I don't know if you're only interested in NJ - Huntington, Long Island is also an area with a concentration of LGBT people (though not necessarily people with kids), and the east end of Long Island also has quite a few kids from our families in the schools (Sag Harbor, Springs, etc.).

Let me know if you'd like more focus on a particular area.

Best (and sorry to lose you to the 'burbs!),

Terry
