Response from Terry

There are several pathways to parenthood through adoption: international, private domestic adoption, and adoption through the public system (foster-adopt).
Unfortunately, international adoption is becoming increasingly difficult for LGBT people. Recent international agreements regulating adoption practice have resulted in heightened scrutiny of prospective parents. Better minds than mine on this issue have said that for us, we should look to adopting domestically.
The good news is, the climate is very receptive stateside! There are a good many private agencies that work very openly and enthusiastically with same-sex couples, and here in New York City, the public adoption system is VERY eager to place children in our homes.
When you're back in NYC, plan to attend the Center Kids Wannabe Dads and Moms group, which is specifically for people planning adoption. The group features wonderful, informative guest speakers, and a tremendous forum for information-sharing. The facilitator, Misha Rubin, is a great guy, and the group attracts about 30 people every month. It meets on the first Thursday of the month from 8-10 p.m., and there's no need to pre-register.
