School Questions for LGBT Parents in New York City

Q.

Single-Sex Schools

I remember a GLSEN study from ten years ago that said girls' schools and particularly boys' schools place high stigma on being GLBTQ. Do you think that stigma carries over onto kids with gay/lesbian parents, and if so, should we avoid sending our kids to single-sex schools?

In 2004, GLSEN's State of the State Report indicated that only eight states provided protection for the categories of sexual harassment and a similarly small number of states had anti-bullying laws. GLSEN concluded that, "a school without harassment and discrimination creates a safer learning environment and boosts all student achievement." In the past 10 years I have seen, and been a part of, many school's efforts to diversify their schools with open LGBTQ adults and students. Many independent schools, including same-sex and religiously affiliated schools, have or are creating diversity statements, harassment policies, and clear consequences for students and adults who bully and/or harass others. Knowing the school's particular policies will help you make a good choice for your child and your family. I know of a few all boy's schools in NYC that have worked hard to fight homophobia within their school culture and other co-ed schools that still allow "that's so gay" to be said with little to no consequences. The bottom line is, bullies and homophobes exist everywhere. Avoid any school with no clear evidence of attempting to address homophobia. If you do not have choices in regards to where your child attends school, begin by informing the administration or the district office of your child's right to attend a safe school.
