School Questions for LGBT Parents in New York City

Q.

Religious Schools

Jewish schools, Catholic schools, other religious schools.... Considering applying to these for our kids' nursery school/kindergarten, what should G/L parents look for? What questions should we ask?

Response from Chap

During an interview at a religious affiliated school in NYC, I asked various administrators and teachers of the school to share their thoughts on LGBTQ inclusion given the school's clear religious views. I was very impressed with what I was told and felt that, as an open lesbian with children, I would have felt very comfortable with my own children at the school. While they had an inclusive Mission Statement and Diversity Statement, and an openness to train faculty on LGBTQ families/students, it was the passion that administrators & teachers spoke of teaching and caring for the whole child that won me over. Asking about how LGBTQ themes are visible within the curriculum is always a good question, though some schools are further along in their efforts than others are. You can also ask if the library and classrooms have picture books that positively depict our families. For an extensive list, visit Children Of Lesbians And Gays Everywhere (www.colage.org).
